What is MRK file?

MRK file contains information about the order in which graphics data should be printed in or transferred from image capturing device (camera) to image processing device. MRK files store data in text format. First version of DPOF standard that specifies structure and capabilities of MRK format defined the procedure as photo print parameters and order, typically saved in AUTPRINT.MRK.

The standard was developed in 1998 by Canon, Kodak, Fuji Film, and Matsushita Electric. DPOF 1.10 standard extension specification, published in 2000, defines optional Auto Transfer file (autxfer.mrk), which defines structure of transferred files, and Auto Play file (autplay.mrk) for presenting images. Presentations may also contain audio and video material. Additionally, a feature that allows printing multiple photos on a single page and print size attribute were specified. MRK files define such parameters as:

• [HDR] Header that contains general information about the file, standard version, software with which the file was created, date, and optional information about camera user,
• [JOB] Information about a task, including:
  • Type of task – printing process, data transfer, presentation,
  • Task ID number,
  • Related file,
  • Additional parameters, such as email address, print quality, etc.

MRK files are used by imaging devices – printing service servers or other devices that support DPOF standard. MRK files allow users to attach a camera to such device and automatically print, sent via email, or view a presentation of selected photos.
