What is NWD file?

Files with the NWD extension are generated by the Navisworks software used for purpose of browsing and analysing architectonic projects. Therefore, they are CAD files , which include such elements like: models, their surroundings, current view, observation points, animations, comments and other data.

Differences between NWD and NWF files

Both this formats have the same feature – they are used within Navisworks software, however, they differ substantially. NWF files contain only links to data within source files. NWD files on the other hand include implemented data of the source files, which renders those files independent in a way. In other words, NWD files function as exact images of the main project files.

Browsing and publishing NWD files

Those tasks are handled by separate applications constituting the Navisworks suite. The Navisworks Freedom can be used to browse files while for publishing, user can utilise the Navisworks Manage.

During process of publishing, additional data can be added – password, predefined expiry date or the „read only” attribute.

How to open file with NWD extension?

Problems with accessing NWD may be due to various reasons. What is important, all common issues related to files with NWD extension can be resolved by the users themselves. The process is quick and doesn’t involve an IT expert. We have prepared a listing of which will help you resolve your problems with NWD files.

Step 1. Download and install Navisworks

The main and most frequent cause precluding users form opening NWD files is that no program that can handle NWD files is installed on user’s system. This one is an easy one. Select Navisworks or one of the recommended programs (for example, JetStream Roamer, ProjectDox) and download it from appropriate source and install on your system. Step 2. Verify the you have the latest version of Navisworks

You still cannot access NWD files although Navisworks is installed on your system? Make sure that the software is up to date. Sometimes software developers introduce new formats in place of that already supports along with newer versions of their applications. The reason that Navisworks cannot handle files with NWD may be that the software is outdated. The latest version of Navisworks should support all file formats that where compatible with older versions of the software.

Step 3. Set the default application to open NWD files to Navisworks

If the issue has not been solved in the previous step, you should associate NWD files with latest version of Navisworks you have installed on your device. The process of associating file formats with default application may differ in details depending on platform, but the basic procedure is very similar.

Change the default application in Windows

• Choose the Open with entry from the file menu accessed by right-mouse clicking on the NWD file
• Select Choose another app → More apps
• Finally select Look for another app on this PC, point to the folder where Navisworks is installed, check the Always use this app to open NWD files box and conform your selection by clicking OK button

Change the default application in Mac OS

• From the drop-down menu, accessed by clicking the file with NWD extension, select Information
• Proceed to the Open with section. If its closed, click the title to access available options
• Select the appropriate software and save your settings by clicking Change all
• Finally, a This change will be applied to all files with NWD extension message should pop-up. Click Continue button in order to confirm your choice.

Step 4. Ensure that the NWD file is complete and free of errors

You closely followed the steps listed in points 1-3, but the problem is still present? You should check whether the file is a proper NWD file. Problems with opening the file may arise due to various reasons.

1. The NWD may be infected with malware – make sure to scan it with an antivirus tool.

If the file is infected, the malware that resides in the NWD file hinders attempts to open it. Scan the NWD file as well as your computer for malware or viruses. If the NWD file is indeed infected follow the instructions below.

2. Verify that the NWD file’s structure is intact

3. Verify whether your account has administrative rights

4. Make sure that the system has sufficient resources to run Navisworks

The operating systems may note enough free resources to run the application that support NWD files. Close all running programs and try opening the NWD file.

5. Ensure that you have the latest drivers and system updates and patches installed
