What is RDG file?

In files with the .RDG extension, video data captured by TechSmith Corporation's Morae software are stored. This is a proprietary format, only readable by applications from the Morae suite: Recorder, Observer, or Manager. These applications are used for testing within the Microsoft Windows operating system environment - for data analysis, creating video clips, and presentations.

Creation of RDG Files in the System

Files with the .RDG extension are created by the Morae Recorder program. It is located on the computer - the system on which the test is to be conducted. Working in the background, it allows for simultaneous:

• recording screen activity,
• recording the image from a camera connected to the computer,
• optional transmission of images from both sources to the connected Observer application.

Starting and stopping the activity is also possible from the Observer application on another computer. During the session, task logs can be created, which are attached to the final recording at the end.

Playback of Morae Recorded Video - RDG

The file with the test session recording on the device where the test was performed is saved in the .RDG format. Its playback is only possible after the session ends, solely in the Morae Manager software. A copy of the recording can also be saved on a computer with the connected Observer application, then it takes the form of a file in the .WMV format and a text file .TXT with session logs. The software allows for the creation of .AVI clips or PowerPoint presentations from the recording materials, as well as analyses and charts.

How to open file with RDG extension?

There can be multiple causes why you have problems with opening RDG files on given system. The list below will guide you through the process of addressing the encountered problem.

Step 1. Download and install Morae

Problems with opening and working with RDG files are most probably having to do with no proper software compatible with RDG files being present on your machine. Step 2. Verify the you have the latest version of Morae

Step 3. Assign Morae to RDG files

• Clicking the RDG with right mouse button will bring a menu from which you should select the Open with option
• Click Choose another app and then select More apps option
• Finally select Look for another app on this PC, point to the folder where Morae is installed, check the Always use this app to open RDG files box and conform your selection by clicking OK button

The procedure to change the default program in Mac OS

• From the drop-down menu, accessed by clicking the file with RDG extension, select Information
• Proceed to the Open with section. If its closed, click the title to access available options
• From the list choose the appropriate program and confirm by clicking Change for all....
• If you followed the previous steps a message should appear: This change will be applied to all files with RDG extension. Next, click the Continue button to finalize the process.

Step 4. Verify that the RDG is not faulty

If you followed the instructions form the previous steps yet the issue is still not solved, you should verify the RDG file in question. It is probable that the file is corrupted and thus cannot be accessed.

1. Check the RDG file for viruses or malware

Should it happed that the RDG is infected with a virus, this may be that cause that prevents you from accessing it. It is advised to scan the system for viruses and malware as soon as possible or use an online antivirus scanner. If the scanner detected that the RDG file is unsafe, proceed as instructed by the antivirus program to neutralize the threat.

2. Check whether the file is corrupted or damaged
